Art Reflections Program
The 2010–2011 theme is “Together we can…”
The Reflections Program provides students with an opportunity to engage in the arts through their creativity in visual arts, photography, literature, musical composition, dance choreography and film/video production.
Each year a theme is chosen and students are challenged to express this theme through their art. Reflection entries are critiqued and submitted for competition at the district, state, and national levels. Both AES and the North Fulton Council of PTA’s hold a celebratory reception for all children who participate. This program runs only in the Fall.
A Great Learning Experience
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.
General Guidelines
- Students may submit entries only through a PTA or PTSA in good standing.
- All entries submitted must be original works and must relate to the current year’s Reflections Program theme.
- Each entry must be the work of only one student. Assistance from teachers, parents, or friends is not permitted except in special cases (such as students with physical disabilities).
A Word to Parents
As with any student activity, parent involvement and support are very important. But parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter in the Reflections Program. By producing their own literature, musical compositions, photographs, films, dance routines, and visual artwork, children learn about the arts and, more importantly, they learn about themselves. Students should simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone.
PTA’s Reflections Program helps parents encourage the creativity and continuous self-discovery process of their children. Supporting the Reflections Program is one way you can support the arts in your home, school, and community.
Student Entry Form
Each entry must be accompanied by a Student Entry Form, completely filled out and signed by the student participant. Students who have not completely filled out the entry form will not be eligible to participate in the program. In situations where the child cannot fill out the entry form or write legibly, a parent may complete the form.
Students have the option of titling their works. If a work has a title, the title must be included on the Student Entry Form. If the work has no title, please write “Untitled.” All entries must include an artist statement that describes how the piece relates to the theme. For most arts areas, students must also answer a few questions about how they created their works.
- Required Artist Statement – Each participant is required to submit an artist statement that describes what inspired him or her to create the work and how it relates to the theme. The artist statement is mandatory for all entries in all grade divisions. The statement should not exceed 250 words; there is no minimum length. The Student Entry Form provides a space for the artist statement; if the statement does not fit in the space given, it may be written on a separate sheet and attached to the Student Entry Form. Make sure the student’s full name appears on any sheet attached to the Student Entry Form.
