Accelerated Reader Program

The AR program is designed to encourage young children to read more frequently and to establish lifelong patterns of daily reading. About half the school districts in the US now employ AR programs as part of their elementary school education in reading.

The basic design of AR is fairly simple. To participate, students choose a book to read that has an associated test. After reading the book, the student takes a short computerized test on the book and earns points. Point values are assigned to each book according to book length, difficulty and reading level.

Some teachers may require children in an AR program to achieve a certain amount of points during a year. Others simply ask that children take a certain number of quizzes each year.

At Alpharetta Elementary, student points are rewarded weekly with AR Tags and Book Dollars. Book Dollars may be used to purchase books at the annual school book fair. Attained goals, outstanding achievements and special recognitions are posted on the Accelerated Reader Bulletin Board, located near the Media Center.

Important Dates:

  • August 29 – First Day to Take AR Test
  • September 2 – First Day of AR Rewards Distribution
  • November 14-22 – Fall Bookfair

Alpharetta Elementary currently offers more than 7200 tests. Click here to search for AR tests available:
